General causation
Certain PFAS compounds are associated in the epidemiologic and toxicologic literature with kidney cancer, testicular cancer, ulcerative colitis, thyroid disease, and hypercholesterolemia. General causation is compound-specific and is being litigated claim-by-claim. A detection in a water system is not, by itself, a personal-injury case.
Specific causation / screening
A personal-injury plaintiff still has to show a medically diagnosed injury, a scientifically supportable dose/duration story, and a differential diagnosis that rules out more likely causes. Water-provider cases are a different animal, they are about treatment costs and nuisance, not a cancer diagnosis.
Injuries currently screened
- Kidney cancer
- Testicular cancer
- Ulcerative colitis
- Thyroid disease
- Preeclampsia (as alleged in some inventories)
